The solution
The Elephant Protection Initiative (EPI) is a comprehensive, unified, African-led response to the elephant crisis, with four key goals to securing a meaningful future for elephant populations and people across Africa:
1.
Secure funding from both public and private sectors to implement the African Elephant Action Plan (AEAP)
2.
Close domestic ivory markets where they are still operating
3.
Maintain the international ivory trade ban (established in 1989)
4.
Put ivory stockpiles beyond economic use.
Signatories
Signatories are countries (both range and non-range States) which have committed to meet the aims of the EPI. The EPI was launched by Leaders of Botswana, Chad, Gabon, Ethiopia and Tanzania in 2014, and since then more than 10 additional elephant range States have taken up the invitation to join them as signatories - by committing to the EPI’s actions to secure the survival of African elephants and their habitats.
About Us
Since its launch at the London Conference on Illegal Wildlife Trade in February 2014, the Elephant Protection Initiative has grown into the pre-eminent African-led, partnership-based and results-oriented elephant conservation initiative. An elected Implementation Board of African elephant range State representatives, supported by the EPI Secretariat, work together with partners to ensure its success. Together, two international NGOs, Stop Ivory and Conservation International, form the Secretariat of the EPI. EPI secretariat provides technical and financial support to EPI countries in meeting the EPI goals. They also support countries joining the EPI in being able to meet those goals.
Take Action
We are here to help bring people together under the Elephant Protection Initiative, and channel that support to provide the tools and funding urgently needed for the long-term, sustainable conservation of Africa’s elephants.
Countries join the EPI as signatories, and the secretariat will work with them to implement the EPI’s committments. Meanwhile, conservation, private sector and other organisations can pledge their support - either in principle or through invaluable funding to address the Elephant Crisis.
